Mahua Moitra defends remark on Amit Shah, says ‘idioms not insults’ after FIR in Chhattisgarh.

Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra on Sunday hit back at the BJP after a case was registered against her in Chhattisgarh over her controversial remark on Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Speaking in Nadia district, Moitra had said Shah’s “head should be cut off and put on the table” for failing to prevent infiltration from Bangladesh. Her comments triggered outrage, with a complaint filed in Raipur alleging that her words insulted democratic institutions, spread hatred, and threatened national unity.

Defending herself, Moitra claimed her statement was taken out of context and mistranslated. “Idiots don’t understand idioms,” she said in a video posted on X, explaining that phrases like ‘heads will roll’ in English or ‘lojjae matha kata jawa’ in Bengali are idioms used to signify accountability, not literal violence.

She alleged that her Bengali remark — “matha kete table-e” — was wrongly interpreted in the FIR as “gala kaat diya”. “This is what happens when you use Google Translate to file fake FIRs,” the Krishnanagar MP said.

Moitra also attacked the Chhattisgarh police, accusing them of targeting migrant Bengali workers in Kondagaon district and withdrawing cases only after a High Court notice. Using another idiom, she said the police had to return “with tail between their legs.”

The BJP, meanwhile, has accused Moitra of making derogatory and violent comments against the Union Home Minister, with party leaders demanding strict action against her.
