India’s Kiran Navgire smashed the world record for the fastest century in women’s T20 cricket on Friday, October 17, at VCA Stadium, Civil Lines, Nagpur. Playing for Maharashtra against Nagpur in the Senior Women’s T20 Trophy, Navgire achieved the feat in just 34 balls.
The right-handed opener scored a stunning 106 off 35 balls, hitting 14 fours and seven sixes, surpassing the previous record held by New Zealand captain Sophie Devine, who had scored a 36-ball ton for Wellington against Otago in January 2021.
Navgire’s innings powered Maharashtra to chase a target of 111 in just eight overs, securing a nine-wicket victory. She scored at a strike rate of 302.86, becoming the only woman to score a T20 century at over 300 SR. She shared an unbeaten 103-run partnership for the second wicket with Mukta Magre, who contributed six runs. Maharashtra’s total of 113/1 is now the lowest team score to feature an individual hundred in women’s T20 cricket, breaking the previous record of 123 set by Annerie Dercksen.
Hailing from Mire in Solapur district, Maharashtra, Navgire first rose to prominence during the 2022 Women’s T20 Trophy representing Nagaland. She blasted 162 off 76 balls against Arunachal Pradesh, hitting 35 sixes and becoming the first Indian woman to score over 150 in a T20 match.
Her explosive performances earned her an India T20I debut against England at Chester-le-Street in 2022. However, she has not featured for the national side since the Women’s Asia Cup 2022. In six T20Is, she has batted four times, scoring 17 runs off 19 balls with one not out.
In the Women’s Premier League (WPL), Navgire has been a consistent performer for UP Warriorz, scoring 419 runs in 24 innings at a strike rate of 140.13 over three seasons, although her average remains below 18.
