Golden Globes Nominations Spark Hollywood Awards Season Excitement.
Hollywood’s awards season is officially underway as the Golden Globes nominations are unveiled Monday. Leading the pack are the hit musical “Wicked: For Good,” the Shakespearean family drama “Hamnet,” and the period horror thriller “Sinners.”
Other strong contenders include Paul Thomas Anderson’s politically charged “One Battle After Another,” starring Leonardo DiCaprio, and the mid-century sports dramedy “Marty Supreme,” featuring Timothée Chalamet and Gwyneth Paltrow.
Set for January 11, the Globes are seen as a bellwether for the Oscars. This year’s ceremony continues to offer separate awards for dramas and comedies/musicals, broadening the range of potential red carpet moments.
Variety senior awards editor Clayton Davis said, “The headline this year is: Comedy is where the drama is.” In the comedy/musical category, “Wicked: For Good” will face off against “One Battle After Another,” “Marty Supreme,” and Yorgos Lanthimos’ apocalyptic satire “Bugonia,” starring Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons.
The blockbuster musical adaptation “Wicked: For Good” remains the populist favorite, with Ariana Grande as Glinda and Tony winner Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba both in contention for acting nods.
Drama Dominates With Historical Stories
On the drama side, period pieces lead the way. “Hamnet,” directed by Chloe Zhao, follows Paul Mescal as William Shakespeare navigating his career while Jessie Buckley’s Agnes faces the perils of plague and childbirth.
“Sinners,” from Ryan Coogler, stars Michael B. Jordan as twins entangled in crime in 1930s Mississippi, a box-office hit and top Critics Choice nominee with 17 nods. Guillermo Del Toro’s “Frankenstein,” starring Oscar Isaac and Jacob Elordi, also makes a strong showing.
Each main category will feature six nominees this year, up from five, reflecting a competitive field, particularly in the best actress category, which Davis calls a “Murderers’ Row” of talent.
Television Highlights
The Globes also celebrate television, with top Emmy contenders “Severance” and “The Pitt” in drama, “The Studio” and “Hacks” in comedy, and the limited series “Adolescence” expected to dominate nominations.
Actors Marlon Wayans and Skye Marshall will announce the main nominees at 1315 GMT Monday. The ceremony, hosted again by comedian Nikki Glaser, returns to Beverly Hills on January 11, following last year’s highly viewed gala with over 10 million viewers.
With Oscar nominations due January 22, the Globes are providing an early glimpse at the potential frontrunners shaping Hollywood’s awards race.
