Yashasvi Jaiswal Eyes T20 World Cup, Open to Leading India.
Yashasvi Jaiswal, a mainstay in India’s Test side, has revealed that his ambitions extend beyond red-ball cricket. The 23-year-old is eager to establish himself as a key player in India’s white-ball setup and dreams of featuring in high-profile tournaments like the T20 World Cup. While he is taking his time to fine-tune his game, Jaiswal is determined to meet the high standards he sets for himself.
Since making his international debut in 2023 against the West Indies in Roseau, Jaiswal has been a vital cog in India’s evolving Test team, stepping in as the squad transitions past veterans like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin. Although he had a brief stint in the T20I squad during the same tour, he has yet to cement a permanent spot.
Making the Most of Opportunities
Jaiswal was part of the Indian contingent that won gold at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou. However, limited chances in the T20I side indicate that he is still on the fringes of the white-ball setup. Despite this, the left-hander remains focused on his long-term goal.
“My dream is to play the T20 World Cup, but I try to focus on my game and will wait for my time,” Jaiswal told Agenda AajTak.
His white-ball journey has already seen a milestone: during the home ODI series against South Africa, after a slow start, Jaiswal scored his maiden ODI century in the third match at Visakhapatnam, helping India secure a nine-wicket win and clinch the series. These experiences, he says, are crucial for him to build a consistent presence in the limited-overs format.
Captaincy Ambitions
Jaiswal’s aspirations extend beyond batting. He has also expressed a willingness to lead India if given the opportunity.
“Yes, if I get a chance, I would like to lead India,” he stated.
While the current leadership structure in the Indian team is well-defined—Shubman Gill captains the Test and ODI sides with Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant as vice-captains, and Suryakumar Yadav leads the T20I team—Jaiswal could still make his mark as a captain through the Indian Premier League.
With Sanju Samson’s departure from the Rajasthan Royals, Jaiswal has a chance to vie for the franchise captaincy, following in the footsteps of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who both began their leadership journeys in the IPL.
Focused on honing his skills and grabbing every opportunity, Jaiswal is steadily working towards becoming a pivotal player for India in all formats—both as a batsman and potentially as a future captain.
