Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan met his sister Noreen Niazi at Adiala Jail on Tuesday, around nine months after their last meeting.
The meeting came hours after the Pakistan Supreme Court ordered authorities to facilitate weekly family visits and directed that Khan be shifted to a private hospital in Islamabad for medical evaluation and treatment.
According to The Express Tribune, Noreen’s meeting with her brother lasted around 15 minutes. She briefed him on the Supreme Court’s order regarding his proposed transfer to Shifa International Hospital, asked about his health and discussed some ongoing legal matters.
After meeting Khan, Noreen confirmed the visit but did not speak to the media, honouring an assurance given before the court. She later left the jail with her sisters Aleema Khan and Uzma Khan.
The three sisters had initially reached the Dahgal checkpoint on the road leading to Adiala Jail after the Supreme Court order. Police stopped all three at first but later allowed only Noreen to proceed towards the prison.
Imran Khan Meets Bushra Bibi
Khan also met his wife, Bushra Bibi, at the jail. Their meeting lasted around 30 to 35 minutes, according to the report.
Earlier, Bushra Bibi had met her daughter Mubashra Sheikh and sister-in-law Mehrunnnisa.
Aleema Khan, who had also reached the jail, welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision. Speaking to reporters, she said she was extremely happy about the meeting. When asked whether she had received any indication of a change in circumstances, she responded that there was no such indication.
Supreme Court Allows Weekly Family Meetings
The meetings followed an order by a three-member Supreme Court bench headed by Justice Shahid Waheed directing authorities to arrange weekly meetings between Khan and his family.
The court was hearing petitions concerning Khan’s access to his sisters and personal doctors, as well as concerns over his health.
The order came after the court received a medical board report and a report from the Adiala Jail superintendent. Both reports recommended more frequent meetings with Khan’s immediate family and wife to help manage his blood pressure and anxiety.
Justice Waheed emphasised that allowing family members to meet Khan should not be treated as a favour, describing such access as a fundamental right.
The Supreme Court also ordered authorities to take Khan to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad within two days for medical assessment and treatment. A medical board will examine him with the presence of a senior doctor and his personal physician.
The court directed that Khan remain at the private hospital until the next hearing, scheduled for September 16.
Court Cites Khan’s Health And Fundamental Rights
The Supreme Court’s intervention came after months of concerns from Khan’s family and supporters about his health and alleged restrictions on medical treatment and family access.
The court said its directions were aimed at protecting the jailed former prime minister’s fundamental rights, health and safety.
Jail authorities submitted records of 39 medical examinations conducted by different specialists between November 4, 2023, and August 10, 2026. According to the report, Khan’s right eye, which had been affected by central retinal vein occlusion, had improved significantly following treatment, with his vision returning to “almost normal”.
The court also warned Khan’s party and supporters against using his medical reports for political purposes. It said any violation of its directions could result in the withdrawal of facilities being provided to him.
Khan has been imprisoned at Adiala Jail since 2023 following convictions in several cases. His family and supporters have repeatedly alleged that his access to medical care, lawyers and family members has been restricted, allegations that authorities have denied.
