Bangladesh Family Deaths: Retired Hindu Teacher, Wife and Children Found Dead at Home
A retired Hindu schoolteacher, his wife and their two children were found dead inside their locked home in Bangladesh’s Rangpur city, in a case police are investigating as a suspected strangulation.
The bodies were recovered at around 11:30 pm on Saturday from the Daspara, also known as Machhuapara, area of Rangpur, according to local media reports. Police said the family’s belongings were scattered inside the house, adding another layer of uncertainty to the deaths.
The victims were identified as 65-year-old Ganapati Chakraborty, his 50-year-old wife Pritilata Chakraborty, their 23-year-old daughter Agami Chakraborty Prarthi and their 12-year-old son.
Ganapati was a retired teacher of Rangpur Zilla School. His body was found on the roof of the house, while Pritilata and Agami were found on the staircase. The younger son, a Class 5 student, was found dead underneath a bed.
Police suspect strangulation
Subir Chowdhury, who heads the Rangpur Metropolitan CID, said the scattered belongings initially gave investigators the impression that a robbery may have been attempted. However, he stressed that the exact circumstances surrounding the deaths would only become clear after a detailed investigation.
Rangpur Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Sanatan Chakrabarty said the bodies had been sent for post-mortem examinations. Ropes were reportedly found around the victims’ necks, leading police to suspect strangulation as the cause of death.
Family raises questions over locked house
The circumstances surrounding the discovery have raised further questions. Pritilata’s younger sister, Puja, told local media that the family’s mobile phones had reportedly been switched off since Thursday night.
She said she went to the house on Saturday night but found the main gate locked and the lights switched off.
Ganapati’s niece, Soma Chakraborty, said she had spoken to him on Thursday afternoon and that he had no known enemies. After retiring from teaching, Ganapati was reportedly practising as a homoeopathic practitioner.
Police are continuing to investigate the deaths, while post-mortem reports are expected to provide further information about the cause and circumstances of the incident.
