Sepehran Airlines Boeing 737 Makes Emergency Landing After Cabin Ceiling Panels Collapse Mid-Air

A Sepehran Airlines Boeing 737 operating a domestic flight from Mashhad to Kermanshah in Iran made an emergency return to Mashhad Airport on Tuesday after experiencing a serious technical issue shortly after takeoff.

During the emergency landing, parts of the aircraft’s cabin ceiling lining reportedly came loose and fell into the passenger area. Footage released by Iranian news agency Akharin Khabar showed ceiling panels dropping inside the cabin, exposing sections of the aircraft’s internal structure.

Despite the alarming incident, no passengers or crew members were reported injured. Everyone on board was safely evacuated after the aircraft returned to Mashhad.

According to Brazilian outlet UOL, citing the Rajavi Khorasan provincial government, the incident took place at around 5:39 pm local time. Sepehran Airlines spokesman Hassan Jafari said passengers were able to leave the aircraft safely and were subsequently transferred to another flight to continue their journey to Kermanshah.

The runway at Mashhad Airport was temporarily closed while officials inspected the aircraft and assessed the situation. It was later reopened.

Possible Tyre Failure Under Investigation

Initial reports suggested that one of the aircraft’s landing gear tyres may have burst during the takeoff roll. The incident may have resulted in damage and significant vibrations, prompting the pilots to declare an emergency and return to the airport.

However, the exact cause of the technical failure has not been officially established. Authorities are expected to determine whether a tyre failure or another mechanical problem triggered the emergency.

Second Sepehran Airlines Incident at Mashhad

The latest incident comes less than a month after another Sepehran Airlines Boeing 737 was involved in an accident at Mashhad Airport.

On August 25, Boeing 737-500 flight IS-4310, travelling from Tehran to Mashhad with 127 people on board, veered off the runway after landing. The aircraft’s nose landing gear collapsed, and the plane came to a stop after leaving runway 13L and reaching runway 13R.

No injuries were reported in that incident, while Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization launched an investigation into the cause.

The latest emergency has since attracted attention after videos showing the cabin ceiling panels falling onto passengers circulated online. While no injuries were reported in either incident, the two events have prompted scrutiny of the airline’s aircraft operations and maintenance procedures.

An official investigation into Tuesday’s emergency landing is expected to establish the precise sequence of events and determine whether any underlying mechanical issue contributed to the incident.
