UK: Sikh Bus Driver Attacked, Bus Stolen in Telford; Police Nab Suspect After 10-Minute Chase

A Sikh bus driver was assaulted and his vehicle was allegedly stolen in Telford, England, on Friday evening, triggering a rapid police response and a dangerous pursuit through the town.

The incident took place at around 6:30 pm on September 18 on Court Street in Madeley. Police said the suspect, identified as 33-year-old Ali Balhad, allegedly took control of the bus before driving dangerously and travelling on the wrong side of the road. The vehicle reportedly collided with several other vehicles before the suspect was arrested.

The confrontation was captured on video. In the footage, the suspect can be seen pulling the driver’s beard and repeatedly striking his head against the driver’s head. A woman at the scene can be heard questioning the attack and asking why the man was being treated that way.

The driver can also be heard asking for police to be called and requesting that the suspect be taken away.

POLICE ARREST SUSPECT WITHIN 10 MINUTES

Superintendent Edward Hancox, who oversees local policing in Telford, said officers responded quickly after receiving the first report.

“Officers were on the scene, and had made the arrest, within 10 minutes of the first call being received,” Hancox said.

He added that the suspect remained in police custody while officers continued to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Detective Sergeant Taigh Lannie said the incident would have been alarming for people in the area and praised the rapid response by officers.

POLICE SEEK CCTV AND DASHCAM FOOTAGE

West Mercia Police have appealed to members of the public who may have witnessed the incident or captured it on cameras.

Investigators are particularly seeking dashcam, CCTV, mobile phone and doorbell footage recorded around Court Street, Park Way and High Street at the time of the incident.

Police said such footage could help establish the sequence of events and assist with the ongoing investigation.

SUSPECT FACES MULTIPLE CHARGES

Balhad, who police believe had been in the Telford area for around a week, has been charged with several offences.

These include aggravated vehicle taking, assault, attempted grievous bodily harm, dangerous driving, robbery, theft from a store, threats to kill and three counts of criminal damage.

He has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear before Telford Magistrates’ Court on September 21.

The investigation remains ongoing, with police continuing to appeal for witnesses and footage that could help establish what happened during the incident.
