More than 50 students of Delhi University’s Lady Shri Ram College for Women held a solidarity march outside the campus, demanding justice following the alleged gangrape of a minor girl at Aastha Kunj Park near Kalkaji Mandir.
The protest highlighted concerns over women’s safety in and around the college, with students calling for stronger security measures and greater accountability in the wake of the incident.
Students Raise CCTV, Patrolling Concerns
The students gathered with posters and slogans as they marched from the park towards the college’s rear gate. Although permission for the march had not been granted while discussions over their demands continued, the protesters proceeded with the demonstration.
A key concern raised by the students was the lack of adequate CCTV surveillance and regular police patrolling in the area. They said security issues around the college had been raised even before the latest incident.
Students also called for improved safety arrangements around the campus and neighbouring areas. A poster circulated ahead of the demonstration read, “It’s not my fault I crave the night air, it’s your fault you crave taking it away from me,” PTI reported.
According to the students, incidents of stalking and harassment have also been reported near the college’s back gate, with such concerns having been brought to the administration’s attention on multiple occasions.
LSR To Resume Offline Classes
The college earlier announced that regular offline classes would resume on Thursday, September 24, after being suspended for two days following the alleged incident and a subsequent police encounter with one of the accused.
“Classes shall continue in regular offline mode from tomorrow in the College premises, i.e., Thursday, 24 September 2026,” the college said in a notification.
Classes were suspended on Tuesday and Wednesday after the police encounter, which took place around 50 metres from the college gate and caused concern among students and staff.
LSR Principal Kanika Ahuja said faculty mentors and the college counsellor had been asked to remain available to support students.
“After we got to know about the unfortunate incident, we cancelled classes. The safety, security and well-being of our students is of paramount importance to us,” she told PTI.
Three Arrested In Case
Police said three men had been arrested in connection with the alleged gangrape. One of the accused, identified as Asif, was injured during an exchange of fire with police while officers were attempting to apprehend him, officials said.
The investigation into the case is continuing, while students have called for stronger security arrangements and greater attention to safety concerns around the college.
