AI Smart Glasses and 30,000 Security Personnel Deployed for Republic Day in Delhi

Over 30,000 police personnel and more than 70 paramilitary companies will secure Delhi for the upcoming Republic Day celebrations, officials said on Friday.

For the first time, security forces will use AI-enabled smart glasses equipped with facial recognition and thermal imaging technology. The Indian-made devices are linked in real-time to a police database of criminals, suspected offenders, and proclaimed offenders, allowing officers to identify individuals in crowded areas instantly.

“The wearable devices connect to police mobile phones, giving them access to the criminal database,” said Additional Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Devesh Kumar Mahla. Officers see a green box for individuals with no criminal record and a red box for those flagged in the database.

The security setup includes multi-layered barricades, six layers of checking and frisking, and thousands of CCTV cameras, including AI-enabled FRS cameras. Mobile vehicles with FRS will also patrol key locations. 10,000 personnel will be stationed specifically in the New Delhi area.

Approximately 4,000 rooftop security points have been identified across New Delhi, North, and Central districts, while 500 high-resolution AI cameras are being installed along the parade route. All parade attendees will be provided with security stickers for identification.

Additional measures include tenant and servant verification drives, vigilance in high-footfall areas such as bus stops, railway stations, and markets, and “eyes and ears” awareness sessions with taxi drivers, auto-rickshaw drivers, vendors, and local service providers.

Interstate coordination meetings are also underway between Delhi Police and neighboring state forces to facilitate information sharing and joint preparedness.

“Delhi Police is well prepared to tackle any situation,” Mahla added, noting that mock drills are being conducted with multiple security agencies to ensure readiness.
