Andre Russell Opens Up on Shock IPL Retirement: “Managing All-Rounder Workload Was Tough”

West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell has finally explained his surprising decision to retire from the Indian Premier League (IPL) ahead of the 2026 mini-auction. The 37-year-old, who spent 12 seasons with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), announced his retirement after being released by the franchise in December. Fans had expected him to either be picked up by KKR again or join another team.

In an interview with Cricbuzz, Russell cited the physical demands of the IPL as a major factor in his decision. “It’s based on the number of games and the travel. You have to manage your body, practice sessions, and gym workload while staying fresh. As an all-rounder, it’s always challenging to give your best performance,” he said.

Russell also clarified that he could never imagine playing solely as a batter. “My batting complements my bowling and my bowling complements my batting. I enjoy contributing in both departments, and that’s how I’ve always played,” he added.

While retiring from the IPL, Russell will continue playing in other T20 leagues worldwide. Over 140 IPL matches, he scored 2,651 runs at a strike rate of 174.18—the highest for any player with at least 1,000 balls faced—and took 123 wickets at an average of 23.28, including best figures of 5/15.

Russell enjoyed his best years with KKR, winning the IPL Most Valuable Player award in 2015 and 2019, and lifting two IPL titles in 2014 and 2024. Following his retirement, he will serve as KKR’s power coach for the upcoming season.
