Australia Clinch 4–1 Ashes Series, Hand England Reality Check on Bazball.
Australia completed a 4–1 series victory over England after winning the fifth and final Test of the 2025–26 Ashes at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Thursday, January 8. Chasing a modest 160-run target, Australia sealed the match with relative ease, thanks to Marnus Labuschagne and Jake Weatherald, who were the top scorers in the innings.
England’s Jacob Bethell fought valiantly with a brilliant 154, but his effort could not prevent a series defeat that exposed the visitors’ tactical shortcomings. This marks England’s fourth consecutive Ashes loss in Australia, having won just one Test in the country over the past 15 years. They last held the Ashes in 2015.
Australia’s Chase
Australia made a strong start, with openers Travis Head (29 off 35) and Weatherald (34 off 40) attacking from the outset and putting on 62 runs for the first wicket. England claimed the first breakthrough when Head holed out to mid-wicket, followed shortly by Weatherald’s dismissal at lunch.
In the second session, Steve Smith joined Labuschagne, with the duo steadying the innings. Smith was bowled by Will Jacks, bringing Usman Khawaja to the crease for his final Test appearance, marked by a guard of honour from players and officials. Labuschagne continued to press Australia towards victory before being run out for 37, leaving Cameron Green (22) and Alex Carey (16)** to finish the chase with five wickets in hand.
Earlier, Bethell’s marathon innings helped England post 342 in their second innings, with Mitchell Starc (3/72) ending the resistance. Australia thus needed just 160 runs to clinch the match and series.
Awards and Performances
Travis Head was named Player of the Match for his first-innings 163, while Mitchell Starc received Player of the Series, finishing as the leading wicket-taker with 31 wickets and contributing 156 runs at an average of 26.
Bazball Faces a Reality Check
England’s Ashes loss has raised questions over their Bazball philosophy. Despite series wins against several Test nations, the team has struggled to overcome top sides like Australia and India in challenging conditions. Captain Ben Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum have defended their approach, but the ECB will need to assess the path forward in the coming weeks.
