Bruno Fernandes: Portugal Still Needs Cristiano Ronaldo Ahead of FIFA World Cup 2026

Portugal and Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes has weighed in on the ongoing debate over.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s role in the national team, firmly rejecting the idea that Portugal performs better without its all-time leading scorer. With discussions resurfacing ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Fernandes highlighted the unique qualities Ronaldo brings to the squad that few others can replicate.

The debate intensified after Portugal defeated Armenia 9-1 in their final World Cup qualifier without Ronaldo, following a disappointing loss to the Republic of Ireland. Speaking to Canal 11, Fernandes stressed that judging the team solely on Ronaldo’s presence oversimplifies the tactical picture. “Cristiano inside the box continues to be a very high-level player,” he said. “People think we play better without him, but that’s partly our fault. We must focus on how Cristiano can help us rather than worry about him being on the pitch.”

Fernandes added that different players contribute different strengths. “If Cristiano doesn’t play and Gonçalo Ramos does, Gonçalo brings pressing and diagonal runs. It’s the same with Bernardo Silva; we adapt to enhance each other’s qualities so the team benefits.”

At 40, Ronaldo remains men’s international football’s leading scorer with 143 goals in 226 appearances. Despite uncertainty over his international future during the 2022 World Cup, strong form at Al Nassr secured his return under coach Roberto Martínez. Ronaldo finished Portugal’s World Cup qualifying campaign as top scorer with five goals, helping the team secure their spot in the 2026 tournament.

Fernandes emphasized that Portugal’s success lies not in replacing Ronaldo but in adapting to maximise every player’s strengths, including the contributions of their most iconic figure.
