Practice Self-Compassion
Dr. Gauri Raut, Clinical Psychologist at Dr. L H Hiranandani Hospital, Mumbai, says that one of the most effective ways to manage anxiety is by practising self-compassion.

“Being kind to yourself can significantly reduce stress,” she explains. “Instead of constantly fighting your own thoughts or being overly critical, treat yourself with patience and understanding. Recognising your efforts and appreciating your progress makes a noticeable difference.”

Avoid Unnecessary Comparisons
Stress often arises from unrealistic expectations and comparing yourself to others. “Competing with others creates unnecessary pressure,” notes Dr. Raut. “A healthier approach is to compete with yourself—focus on personal growth rather than measuring your success against someone else’s journey.”

Comparing yourself to others can increase anxiety and lower self-esteem. Staying grounded in your own experiences and accepting yourself as you are allows for greater emotional stability and happiness. “Do not try to be someone you’re not. Authenticity is key to long-term mental well-being,” she adds.

Seek Support When Needed
Excessive stress can leave people emotionally drained. While occasional stress is normal, constant anxiety can harm mental health. “Learning to pause, relax, and show yourself kindness can improve overall quality of life,” says Dr. Raut. She also stresses that seeking professional help when anxiety becomes unmanageable is a positive step, not a weakness.

By understanding your motivations, practising self-kindness, and avoiding unnecessary comparisons, it becomes easier to manage stress and lead a more balanced, fulfilling life.
