Constipation Isn’t Always Harmless: 5 Daily Habits to Keep Your Gut Healthy

Many people brush off constipation with the belief that it will go away on its own in a day or two. While occasional constipation is common and may result from dehydration or dietary changes, frequent or persistent episodes shouldn’t be ignored. Chronic constipation can increase the risk of several colorectal complications if left untreated.

According to Dr. Pavan Sugoor, Associate Professor at Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, Bengaluru, repeatedly straining during bowel movements can lead to problems such as haemorrhoids (piles), anal fissures, and even rectal prolapse, a condition in which the rectum slips out of its normal position due to weakened pelvic muscles.

Here are five simple daily habits that can help prevent constipation and protect your digestive health:

1. Eat More Fibre and Stay Hydrated

A diet low in fibre and inadequate water intake are among the leading causes of constipation. Fibre adds bulk to stool and helps it move smoothly through the digestive tract, while water keeps stools soft and easier to pass.

Include fibre-rich foods such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables, legumes and nuts in your meals, and aim to drink 8–12 glasses of water every day.

2. Stay Physically Active

Regular exercise helps stimulate the muscles of the intestines, allowing waste to move more efficiently through the colon. People with sedentary lifestyles are more likely to experience sluggish bowel movements.

Even moderate activities like brisk walking, cycling, jogging or swimming can improve gut function and reduce the risk of constipation.

3. Manage Stress and Prioritise Sleep

The gut and brain are closely connected through the gut-brain axis, which means emotional stress can directly affect digestion. Chronic stress and poor sleep may slow bowel movements, making constipation more likely.

Practising yoga, meditation, deep breathing exercises and maintaining a regular sleep schedule can help improve digestive health and overall well-being.

4. Improve Your Toilet Posture

Your sitting position on the toilet can make a significant difference. Raising your feet on a small stool so that your knees are positioned above your hips helps straighten the rectum, making bowel movements easier and reducing the need to strain.

5. Never Ignore the Urge to Go

Delaying a bowel movement allows the colon to absorb more water from the stool, making it harder, drier and more difficult to pass later. Ignoring the body’s natural signals can also contribute to bloating, discomfort and long-term bowel dysfunction.

Responding promptly to the urge to use the toilet is one of the simplest ways to maintain healthy bowel habits and prevent constipation-related complications.

Why It Matters

Occasional constipation is usually manageable with lifestyle changes, but recurring symptoms deserve attention. If constipation persists for several weeks, is accompanied by severe abdominal pain, bleeding, unexplained weight loss or changes in bowel habits, consult a healthcare professional to rule out an underlying medical condition.

Adopting healthy daily habits can go a long way in keeping your digestive system functioning smoothly and reducing the risk of long-term complications.
