England Hold Nerve in Final-Over Thriller to Stay Alive in T20I Series.
In a match that had it all — explosive batting, a dramatic middle-order collapse, costly fielding errors, and a nail-biting finish — England Women edged out India by 5 runs in the third T20I at The Oval on July 4, keeping the five-match series alive at 1-2.
Dunkley-Wyatt Light Up the Powerplay
Desperate to avoid a series defeat, England needed a spark — and got a full blaze. Openers Sophia Dunkley (75 off 53) and Danni Wyatt-Hodge (66 off 42) tore into the Indian bowling with a 137-run opening stand, their highest in T20Is. It was the perfect platform — until it all unravelled.
England’s Collapse: From 137/0 to 171/9
Once Deepti Sharma (3/25) and Arundhati Reddy (3/29) came into the attack, England’s momentum screeched to a halt. Wickets fell in a heap, with India snatching nine wickets for just 34 runs. Shreyanka Patil chipped in with two more as England finished with a far-from-threatening 171/9 — a total that looked like a missed opportunity after their flying start.
India Start Strong, Then Stumble
India’s chase began on a confident note. Smriti Mandhana (51 off 38) and Shafali Verma (47 off 25) capitalized on England’s sloppy fielding — multiple dropped catches — and raced to an 85-run opening stand.
But the match turned again when Sophie Ecclestone bowled Shafali, and Lauren Filer struck twice in quick succession, removing both Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues. Suddenly, the game was alive again.
Final Over Drama
With 20 runs needed off 12 balls, Harmanpreet Kaur and Richa Ghosh looked set to steer India home. But Charlie Dean took a stunning diving catch to dismiss Ghosh, and England’s bowlers turned the screws.
Lauren Bell bowled the final over, holding her nerve to concede just six runs. With six needed off the last ball, Harmanpreet went for glory — only to find Ecclestone at mid-off.
Series Alive at 2-1
It was a gutsy fightback from England, who now trail 1-2 in the five-match series. The next two games promise high stakes as India look to close out the series, while England fight to level it.
