Neeraj Chopra Classic Debuts in Bengaluru: A Landmark for Indian Athletics
It’s a historic weekend for Indian sport. For the first time ever, India is hosting a top-tier international athletics meet — and fittingly, it’s built around the country’s Olympic gold medallist who transformed Indian track and field: Neeraj Chopra.
On Saturday, July 5, the iconic Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru will witness the inaugural Neeraj Chopra Classic (NC Classic) — a world-class javelin event that brings together Olympic champions, rising Indian talents, and global stars, all under the stewardship of Neeraj himself.
Bengaluru Gets Behind Its Golden Boy
The buzz in Bengaluru is unmistakable. From giant hoardings near the airport to graffiti-style banners along traffic-clogged streets, Neeraj’s face is everywhere. And it’s not just promotional. The Olympic champion has taken a personal interest in the event, interacting with fans, taking morning walks through the city, and even casually asking pedestrians if they know about the NC Classic.
What Is the NC Classic?
The NC Classic is a World Athletics Continental Tour Gold event — the highest status below the prestigious Diamond League. It places India firmly on the global athletics map, making it the first time the country hosts a top-tier track and field meeting.
This event is similar in stature to the Ostrava Golden Spike in the Czech Republic or the Mondo Classic in Sweden, both of which regularly draw elite competitors. Crucially, athletes competing here will earn ranking points that count towards qualification for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo later this year.
The Classic also offers significant prize money and invaluable international exposure for young Indian javelin throwers.
“This is a new chapter for Indian athletics,” Neeraj said at the pre-event press meet. “Winning medals is one thing — but giving something lasting to Indian sport is what truly matters to me.”
How the Dream Became Reality
The vision for this event began after Neeraj’s Tokyo Olympics triumph in 2021. Inspired by the electrifying crowds and atmosphere abroad, Neeraj dreamed of creating a similar platform in India.
The real push began last year, when Neeraj partnered with JSW Sports to bring the event to life.
“From finalising the venue and ensuring it met international standards, to securing sponsorships, athlete coordination, content, and ticketing — it’s been a massive effort,” said Karan Yadav, Chief Commercial Officer at JSW Sports.
Who’s Competing at the NC Classic?
Yes, Neeraj Chopra will compete — and he’s the clear favourite.
The field includes 12 elite javelin throwers from around the world:

Indian Young Guns to Watch
The NC Classic gives India’s emerging javelin talent a big-stage debut.
Sachin Yadav, just 24, has impressed with consistent 80m+ throws and a recent PB of 85.16m.
Yash Vir Singh, 22, placed 5th at the Asian Championships earlier this year.
For these athletes, the Classic offers a rare opportunity to test themselves against Olympic and World medallists on home soil.
Favourites and Form
Neeraj enters the NC Classic in stellar form, fresh off wins at the Paris Diamond League (88.16m) and Ostrava Golden Spike (85.29m). His personal best of 90.23m this season ranks second globally, just behind Germany’s Julian Weber (91.06m).
While veterans like Röhler and Yego bring pedigree, athletes like Curtis Thompson, Rumesh Tharanga, and Sachin Yadav are all capable of breaching the 85m mark.
And yes — conditions in Bengaluru might just be perfect for another 90m throw.
