Fit Again Hardik Pandya to Feature for Baroda in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy

India’s premier all-rounder Hardik Pandya has been cleared by the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) to return to competitive cricket and will turn out for Baroda in the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT).

He is expected to feature in Baroda’s matches against Punjab on December 2 and Gujarat on December 4, with the possibility of a third outing depending on his physical response.

Pandya has been out of action since suffering a left quadriceps injury during the Asia Cup in September, which ruled him out of India’s assignments against Australia and the ODI series in South Africa. He joined the CoE on October 14 for a structured rehabilitation programme that spanned over six weeks and culminated on November 30. During this period, he gradually increased his training intensity and eventually completed all stages of the CoE’s Return-to-Play protocol, earning clearance to resume his full skill set, including bowling.

While there was an initial expectation that Pandya might return directly for the South Africa ODIs starting November 30, the medical and support staff advised a phased reintroduction. The focus, with an eye on the 2026 T20 World Cup, is on allowing him to regain match rhythm and confidence in domestic T20s before stepping back into international cricket.

Baroda will monitor how Pandya responds to match workloads — particularly his ability to bowl in back-to-back games — before deciding on his inclusion for the December 6 fixture against Haryana. National selector Pragyan Ojha has been assigned to track Pandya’s performances and report to the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee as they finalise India’s T20I squad for the South Africa tour.

India’s T20I series in South Africa begins on December 9 in Cuttack, followed by matches in Mullanpur and other venues. Pandya’s return via domestic cricket offers India a timely boost as preparations intensify ahead of the global tournament.
