India Endorses Trump-Putin Alaska Summit, Reiterates PM Modi’s ‘Not an Era of War’ Message.

India on Saturday welcomed the planned 15 August meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, expressing hope it could pave the way for ending the war in Ukraine.

In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the summit “holds the promise of bringing to an end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and opening up the prospects for peace.” The MEA also recalled Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s repeated message that “this is not an era of war” and said India is ready to support any peace initiative emerging from the talks.

“India welcomes the understanding reached between the United States and the Russian Federation for a meeting in Alaska on 15 August 2025. As Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said on several occasions, this is not an era of war. India, therefore, endorses the upcoming summit and stands ready to support these efforts,” the statement read.

The Alaska meeting will be Trump’s first official engagement with Putin since starting his second term in January 2025, and the first US-Russia presidential summit since June 2021, when then-President Joe Biden met Putin in Geneva.

Trump confirmed the meeting on his social media platform Truth Social, calling it “highly anticipated” and noting it would take place in the “Great State of Alaska.” The announcement ends weeks of speculation, as earlier reports suggested Putin had preferred the United Arab Emirates as the venue. The US is believed to have pushed for a domestic location for security and diplomatic reasons.

While the primary focus will be Ukraine, Washington has yet to release details about the agenda or the officials who will accompany the president.
