Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday responded firmly to the US decision to impose 50 per cent tariffs on a range of Indian goods, effective August 26, calling the move an example of “economic selfishness.”
Speaking at a public rally in Ahmedabad, Modi said, “We are witnessing policies rooted in economic selfishness across the world. But India will stand strong against such protectionist steps and safeguard the interests of its people.”
Reassuring small shopkeepers, farmers, cattle rearers and entrepreneurs, he added, “From the land of Gandhi, I promise you this: your interests come first. My government will never allow small businesses, farmers, or cattle rearers to suffer.”
