Indian-origin woman sexually assaulted in ‘racially motivated’ attack in UK; police release CCTV of suspect
A 20-year-old Indian-origin woman was allegedly raped in a racially aggravated attack in Walsall, West Midlands, UK, police said on Sunday.
The assault, which investigators believe was motivated by the victim’s racial background, has sparked widespread outrage. According to West Midlands Police, officers were called to the Park Hall area on Saturday after receiving reports of a distressed woman found sitting in the middle of the street following the assault. Police have since released CCTV footage of a man suspected to be involved in the attack and urged the public to help identify him.
“This was an absolutely appalling attack on a young woman, and we are doing everything we can to arrest the person responsible,” said Detective Chief Inspector Ronan Tyrer, who is leading the investigation. He added that multiple teams were gathering forensic evidence and reviewing video footage to trace the suspect.
Authorities have appealed to anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage from the area to come forward, stressing that “even the smallest detail could be crucial” in the case.
The incident has triggered condemnation from several UK lawmakers. Zarah Sultana, MP for Coventry South, called the crime “horrifying,” linking it to a rise in “racism and misogyny fuelled by fascism and hate.” Preet Kaur Gill, a Labour MP, also described the attack as “deeply shocking,” urging urgent action to ensure women’s safety.
Police have launched a major investigation and said the victim is being supported by specially trained officers while efforts to identify and arrest the perpetrator continue.
