Jaishankar Meets Chinese Vice President in Beijing, Bats for Open Dialogue Amid Global Uncertainty.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Chinese Vice President Han Zheng in Beijing on Monday, emphasising the need for open dialogue between India and China against the backdrop of a complex global landscape.

Jaishankar is visiting China to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. During his opening remarks, he expressed optimism that discussions held during the visit would help maintain the recent positive trajectory in bilateral relations.

“India supports a successful Chinese presidency of the SCO,” Jaishankar said, noting the steady improvement in ties since Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping met in Kazan last October. “I am confident that my discussions here will help sustain that momentum.”

He also highlighted the symbolic importance of 2025, as both nations recently marked the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties. Jaishankar noted the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra — a sacred pilgrimage route for Indians — had been well received and reflected growing goodwill.

On broader strategic issues, Jaishankar acknowledged the current volatility in international affairs and underlined the responsibility of India and China, as neighbouring powers and major economies, to maintain candid engagement.

“The international situation is very complex today. As neighbours and major global players, an open exchange of views and perspectives between India and China is essential,” he said.
