Jemimah Refuses to Let Rough WPL Captaincy Debut Define Delhi Capitals’ Campaign

Delhi Capitals captain Jemimah Rodrigues said the team is determined to put their disastrous start against Mumbai Indians behind them as the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2026 progresses.

DC suffered a heavy 50-run defeat against the two-time champions at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai on Saturday. Chasing a formidable 196, the Capitals were bowled out for 145 in 19 overs. Apart from Chinelle Henry’s fighting 56, no other batter could contribute meaningfully.

Reflecting on the match, Jemimah felt the team bowled well, but admitted the lack of partnerships with the bat cost them dearly. Despite the setback, she remained optimistic, vowing that DC would regroup and mount a strong comeback.

“We bowled well, but we couldn’t build partnerships with the bat. We’ll work on that. It’s a different team, so we can’t be too harsh on ourselves. I’m confident we will bounce back,” Jemimah said in the post-match presentation.

Jemimah Rodrigues Upbeat Despite Tough Start

Saturday was a special occasion for Jemimah, who led Delhi Capitals in the WPL for the first time, with her parents present to witness the milestone. Stepping in as captain in place of the legendary Meg Lanning, Jemimah said she thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

“I did have fun captaining. To be here, in front of my parents and at home, was great. Tough start, but a low turnaround is a good thing—we won’t dwell on it. A good team keeps such games aside, and we hope to do that,” she added.

On a personal note, Jemimah had a disappointing outing with the bat, scoring just one run off three deliveries before being dismissed by Shabnim Ismail.

The Capitals will aim for a quick turnaround when they face Meg Lanning’s UP Warriorz on Sunday in Navi Mumbai.
