Khalid Jamil Leads Race to Become India Men’s Football Team Coach.

Khalid Jamil has emerged as the leading contender to become the next head coach of the Indian men’s football team, according to a PTI report. Known for maximizing results with modest resources in both the I-League and Indian Super League, Jamil is one of three shortlisted candidates by the All India Football Federation (AIFF), alongside former India coach Stephen Constantine and Slovakian manager Stefan Tarkovic.

The AIFF received nearly 170 applications for the position, including big international names such as Xavi, Robbie Fowler, and Harry Kewell. While the federation acknowledged the surprise application from former Barcelona manager Xavi on July 24, they ultimately ruled it out due to the high costs associated with hiring him.

Despite the global interest, Jamil appears to have edged ahead in the selection process. If appointed, he would be the first Indian to take charge of the national team in several years—a significant departure from AIFF’s recent preference for foreign managers.

Why Khalid Jamil Makes a Strong Case
Jamil’s journey through Indian football has been remarkable. A former midfielder with 40 caps for India, he began his coaching career with Mumbai FC in 2009. His true breakthrough came with Aizawl FC, whom he guided from the second division to a stunning I-League title in their debut top-flight season—despite operating on a shoestring budget.

Later, he impressed again with Northeast United, steering them to the ISL semi-finals in 2021–22, before repeating the feat with Jamshedpur FC. His ability to build competitive squads out of limited means has made him a respected figure among Indian football fans and stakeholders alike.

Decision Expected Soon
AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey confirmed on July 24 that the final decision on the new head coach will be made within 10 days.

“I think 10 days from now, if all goes smoothly,” Chaubey said. “We will hold an executive committee meeting, and thereafter the name of the head coach will be announced.”

That meeting could mark a historic moment for Indian football—especially if Khalid Jamil becomes the first homegrown coach to take the national reins in a pivotal phase for the sport in the country.
