Kolkata Law Student Alleges Gang-Rape on Campus; Three, Including Staffer and Ex-TMC Leader, Arrested.
A 24-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped inside the South Calcutta Law College campus on Wednesday, prompting a swift police investigation and the arrest of three accused, including a college staff member, a student, and a former student reportedly linked to the Trinamool Congress (TMC).
According to police, the survivor had visited the college around noon to submit examination-related documents. She was sitting in the student union room when, as per her complaint, one of the accused instructed that the main college gate be locked. The woman was then allegedly assaulted inside the campus’s security guard room.
Following the complaint, the Kasba Police Station registered an FIR and launched a probe. The arrested individuals have been identified as Monojit Mishra (31), a former student and ex-president of the college’s TMC student wing (TMCP); Zaib Ahmed (19), a student; and Pramit Mukherjee alias Mukhopadhyay (20), a staff member. Police seized their mobile phones during the arrests.
Mishra and Ahmed were arrested near Talbagan Crossing on June 26, while Mukherjee was detained later that night from his residence. Forensic teams have secured the alleged crime scene, and a preliminary medical examination of the survivor has been conducted.
The three accused were presented in Alipore court on Thursday. Police sought 14-day custody, but the court granted remand until Tuesday.
The incident has sparked outrage, with Opposition Leader Suvendu Adhikari blaming Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s administration and the Kolkata Police. “The CM has no right to remain in her chair,” Adhikari said, citing law and order lapses.
BJP IT Cell chief Amit Malviya also reacted strongly, alleging that crimes against women continue unchecked in Bengal. He referred to a similar recent incident at RG Kar Medical College and said the state had become a “nightmare for women.”
In response, Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim called the matter “extremely serious” and said he would speak after receiving a briefing from the police.
