Lalit Upadhyay Bids Farewell to International Hockey After Glorious Decade.

Two-time Olympic bronze medallist Lalit Kumar Upadhyay has announced his retirement from international hockey, drawing the curtain on a remarkable career that spanned more than a decade. His decision came shortly after India’s thrilling 4-3 victory over Belgium in the final match of their FIH Pro League season on Sunday.

The 31-year-old forward, hailing from Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, leaves behind a legacy of resilience, redemption, and brilliance—having played a pivotal role in India’s Olympic podium finishes in Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024.

“This journey began in a small village, with limited resources but limitless dreams,” Lalit shared in an emotional post.
“From facing a sting operation to standing on the Olympic podium—not once, but twice—it’s been a path full of challenges, growth, and unforgettable pride.”

From Controversy to Comeback
Upadhyay’s story is not just one of sporting success but also of incredible perseverance. At just 17, he was caught in the crosshairs of a 2008 sting operation targeting corruption in Indian hockey. Although later exonerated, the controversy led to a temporary exclusion from the national setup—an episode that nearly ended his career.

His turnaround began with the unwavering support of former Indian captain Dhanraj Pillay, who helped him secure a spot with Air India in 2010. That lifeline, coupled with mentorship from his first coach Shri Parmanand Mishra, eventually put him back on track.

A Decade of Contribution
Making his senior debut in 2014, Lalit went on to earn over 179 caps and score more than 40 goals for India. His slick stick-work, intelligent positioning, and relentless work ethic made him one of the most consistent and respected forwards in Indian hockey.

Some of his other career highlights include:

  • Gold at the 2016 & 2018 Asian Champions Trophy
  • Gold at the 2017 Asia Cup
  • Bronze at the 2017 Hockey World League Final
  • Silver at the 2018 Champions Trophy
  • Honoured with the Arjuna Award in 2021

He was also part of the Kalinga Lancers in the Hockey India League and played an influential role in India’s consistent performances on the continental and global stage.

A Farewell with Gratitude
In his farewell message, Lalit expressed heartfelt thanks to the people and institutions that shaped his journey:

“To my first coach, Shri Parmanand Mishra, who introduced me to hockey. To Harender Sir, who picked me for Air India. To Sameer Bhai and Dhanraj Sir, who stood by me. To BPCL, which gave me eight meaningful years. To Hockey India, my teammates, and friends who made this journey unforgettable. And to the UP government, for appointing me as a Deputy Superintendent of Police—a responsibility I accept with pride.”

A special tribute was reserved for India captain Harmanpreet Singh, whom he called “one of the greatest gifts hockey has given me.”

Legacy Beyond Numbers
Lalit Upadhyay’s journey—from a small-town hopeful to a decorated Olympian—is a powerful story of grit, grace, and redemption. His career serves as an inspiration to countless young players from modest backgrounds, proving that talent, when paired with resilience and support, can overcome even the most daunting setbacks.

As he steps away from the international arena, Indian hockey bids farewell to one of its most dependable warriors—one whose contributions go far beyond medals and match stats.

“It has been the greatest honour of my life to represent India,” he said. “Thank you for everything.”
