Climate Change Poses Growing Global Health Risks, Warns Lancet Report.
A new Lancet report has warned that climate change is rapidly emerging as one of the greatest health threats facing humanity, with rising temperatures, extreme weather events, and pollution already endangering millions worldwide.
According to the 2025 Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change, climate impacts are worsening existing health inequalities and putting unprecedented pressure on healthcare systems. The report highlights that heat-related deaths have surged globally, vector-borne diseases are spreading to new regions, and food and water insecurity is rising due to prolonged droughts and floods.
The analysis estimates that over 200 million people were exposed to extreme heat in 2024 alone, with record-breaking temperatures affecting countries across Asia, Europe, and North America. Meanwhile, the frequency of wildfires and severe storms has also increased, leading to spikes in respiratory and cardiovascular illnesses.
The Lancet study emphasizes that the window to act is closing fast and calls for immediate and coordinated global action to cut greenhouse gas emissions, phase out fossil fuels, and invest in climate-resilient healthcare infrastructure.
“Climate change is not just an environmental issue — it’s a public health emergency,” the report warns, urging governments to integrate health protection into their climate policies ahead of the upcoming COP30 summit in Brazil.
