Marketa Vondrousova Wins Berlin Open in Thrilling Finale, Eyes Wimbledon Repeat.
Marketa Vondrousova captured the Berlin Open title on Sunday, defeating China’s Wang Xinyu in a hard-fought three-set final as the Czech star continues her comeback ahead of Wimbledon 2025.
The 25-year-old prevailed 7-6 (12/10), 4-6, 6-2 in a match that lasted over two hours, showcasing grit and resilience at the Steffi Graf Stadion. The victory marks a significant milestone in Vondrousova’s return from a shoulder injury that had sidelined her for parts of the season.
Comeback in Motion
Vondrousova, who won Wimbledon in 2023, looked emotional during the trophy presentation.
“I’m just very grateful to be standing here,” she said. “We came here just hoping to win one match… and now this is happening. I’m so thankful to my team for getting me through.”
The Berlin title is a confidence booster for the left-hander, who now heads to Wimbledon aiming to defend her crown.
A Tough Road to the Title
Vondrousova had a challenging draw in Berlin:
- First Round: Defeated Madison Keys in straight sets
- Round 2: Beat Diana Shnaider in three sets
- Quarterfinals: Took down Ons Jabeur
- Semifinals: Overpowered world No. 3 Aryna Sabalenka
Final: Outlasted Wang Xinyu in a tense showdown
The opening set of the final was a battle of nerves, requiring 22 points in the tiebreaker, with Vondrousova edging it 12–10. Wang, 23, responded by taking the second set, but the Czech upped her level in the decider to seal the championship.
Wang’s Breakthrough Week
Despite the loss, Wang Xinyu — who came through the qualifiers — had a breakthrough run, defeating several higher-ranked players to reach her first WTA 500 final.
“It’s been an unbelievable week for us,” Wang said post-match. “We’ll keep building from here and look ahead to what’s next.”
