Matt Henry’s Six-for Wrecks Zimbabwe as New Zealand Take Command in First Test.

New Zealand fast bowler Matt Henry produced a devastating spell of seam bowling to claim 6 for 39, as Zimbabwe crumbled to 149 all out on the opening day of the first Test in Bulawayo on Wednesday, July 30.

Zimbabwe captain Craig Ervine opted to bat after winning the toss, but the decision backfired as the hosts lost wickets in clusters and never recovered. This marked their second-lowest Test total of the year.

Henry struck early with the new ball, removing openers Brian Bennett and Ben Curran in quick succession. He continued to dominate with his relentless accuracy and bounce, picking up three top-order wickets before lunch and finishing off the tail with smart variations.

Nathan Smith offered solid support, taking 3 for 33. He removed key batter Sean Williams and later trapped both Ervine and wicketkeeper Tafadzwa Tsiga lbw — though the Ervine decision looked questionable on replay.

Zimbabwe’s batters failed to convert their starts, despite a few dropped chances. Sikandar Raza, returning to the Test side, was unsettled by Henry’s short-pitched attack and fell tamely for 9.

New Zealand’s fielding was sharp throughout. Acting captain Mitchell Santner pulled off a diving catch to help wrap up the innings before tea.

In response, the Kiwi openers made light work of Zimbabwe’s bowling. Devon Conway remained unbeaten on 51, registering his 12th Test half-century, while Will Young was solid on 41* as the visitors closed at 92 without loss — just 57 runs behind with all ten wickets in hand.

With this dominant start, New Zealand look well on track to extend their strong Test record against Zimbabwe, having won 11 of their 17 previous encounters.
