Muhammad Yunus Sparks Controversy With Gift to Pakistani General Featuring Bangladesh Map Including Northeast India
Yunus’s Gift to Pakistani General Raises Eyebrows Over Map Depiction.
Bangladesh’s Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus has drawn attention after gifting an artwork titled “Art of Triumph” to Pakistan’s Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, General Sahir Shamshad Mirza. The artwork reportedly features a map that includes parts of India’s Northeast within an expanded outline of Bangladesh, triggering unease in strategic and diplomatic circles.
Sources familiar with the development said the gesture, coming from Bangladesh’s interim leader to Pakistan’s top military officer rather than a civilian counterpart, has raised questions about its timing and intent. The depiction of the map, they noted, could be interpreted as politically charged given the sensitivities surrounding regional borders.
Observers in Dhaka and New Delhi said the move may complicate regional perceptions of Bangladesh’s interim administration, especially as it seeks to balance relations with its neighbours. Some analysts cautioned against overinterpreting the gesture, noting that official diplomatic channels in Dhaka and Islamabad have not issued any statements suggesting political intent behind the gift.
Indian officials have not commented publicly on the matter. However, experts noted that such symbolic exchanges often carry nuanced messages in South Asian diplomacy and are being closely watched in the context of shifting regional alignments.
