Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday urged states to function as “Team India” to mitigate the domestic impact of the ongoing West Asia conflict, calling for coordinated action similar to the response during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Chairing a high-level meeting with Chief Ministers and Lieutenant Governors, Modi described the geopolitical situation as “dynamic and uncertain” and stressed the need for vigilance and preparedness, with focus on economic stability, energy security, and supply chains.
He recalled how the Centre and states worked together during the pandemic to minimise disruptions, saying the same cooperative approach would be key in handling current challenges arising from the conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.
‘No Nationwide Lockdown’
Addressing concerns over fuel shortages and panic buying, the Prime Minister dismissed rumours of an “energy lockdown.”
“There will be no nationwide lockdown,” he said, assuring that India has adequate supplies of petrol, diesel, and LPG.
He emphasised that clear communication is essential to maintain public confidence and prevent unnecessary panic.
Focus on Supply Chains, Vigilance
Modi directed states to ensure smooth functioning of supply chains and take strict action against hoarding and profiteering. He also cautioned against misinformation and urged dissemination of accurate information.
Special attention was sought for border and coastal states, particularly in managing shipping and essential supplies. The Prime Minister also warned against online fraud and fake agents exploiting the situation.
Agriculture, Citizen Support, and Long-Term Planning
In the agriculture sector, Modi stressed advance planning for fertiliser storage and distribution to avoid disruptions.
He also called for activating control rooms at state and district levels and setting up helplines to assist families of Indians residing in West Asia.
Highlighting long-term preparedness, the Prime Minister urged states to promote alternative energy sources such as solar power and biofuels, while boosting domestic oil and gas exploration.
Earlier, the government had briefed political leaders on the crisis at an all-party meeting. Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Modi had warned that global challenges arising from the conflict could persist, urging the nation to remain united and prepared.
