Sultanpur Court Acquits Rahul Gandhi in Defamation Case Over 2018 Remarks Against Amit Shah
A court in Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh, on Monday acquitted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in a defamation case stemming from his 2018 remarks against Amit Shah, who was serving as the BJP’s national president at the time.
The complaint was filed by local BJP leader Vijay Mishra, who alleged that Gandhi had made derogatory remarks against Shah. The case centred on statements made by the Congress leader during a political event in 2018.
Gandhi appeared before the MP-MLA court in Sultanpur in February and denied the allegations. He maintained that the complaint was politically motivated and contested the charges brought against him.
Representing Gandhi, his counsel, Kashi Prasad Shukla, had termed the case baseless and urged the court to dismiss the complaint.
The court’s acquittal brings relief to the Congress leader in the long-running legal dispute linked to his remarks against Shah. The case had drawn attention because of the political rivalry between the Congress and the BJP.
