Sanjay Dutt Opens Up About Jail Life: Theatre, Radio, and Lessons Learned.
Actor Sanjay Dutt recently reflected on his transformative experience behind bars, revealing how his passion for creativity helped him cope with prison life. During an appearance on The Great Indian Kapil Show with Suniel Shetty, he shared that he formed a theatre group in jail, directing fellow inmates — including murder convicts — as actors.
Sanjay was imprisoned in Pune’s Yerwada Central Jail from 2013 to 2016 after the Supreme Court upheld a 2007 TADA Court conviction for illegal possession of weapons related to the 1993 case.
Talking about his time inside, he said, “I don’t regret anything that has happened in my life. My main regret is that my parents left me too soon. I really miss them.”
In addition to theatre, Sanjay kept busy with carpentry, earning wages by making chairs and paper bags. He also started a jail radio station, Radio YCP, which featured scripts written by other inmates and included comedy segments.
Reflecting on his jail experiences, Sanjay noted that these activities gave him purpose and helped him navigate the challenges of incarceration. After completing his sentence in 2016, he returned to acting and remains active in Bollywood, most recently appearing in Baaghi 4 alongside Tiger Shroff, Sonam Bajwa, and Harnaaz Kaur Sandhu.
Off-screen, Sanjay is married to Maanayata Dutt and the couple shares twins. They currently reside in Dubai, with Sanjay frequently traveling to Mumbai for work. From radio programs and carpentry to theatre direction, Sanjay’s time in prison reveals a side of the actor rarely seen by fans — one of resilience, creativity, and reflection.
