N. Jency Becomes Tamil Nadu’s First Trans Woman PhD Appointed Assistant Professor.

In a landmark moment for inclusivity in Indian academia, Dr. N. Jency has become the first transgender woman in Tamil Nadu to earn a PhD and secure an academic appointment as Assistant Professor in the Department of English at Loyola College, Chennai.

Rising Through Adversity
Hailing from Tiruttani in Tiruvallur district, Jency’s journey is one of sheer resilience. Battling societal stigma and personal hardship, she pursued academic excellence relentlessly — securing gold medals in both her undergraduate and postgraduate studies. Her remarkable success has now placed her in the corridors of one of Chennai’s most prestigious educational institutions.

Her appointment has been widely celebrated, including by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, who publicly congratulated her, saying,

“Let several hundreds more reach success through education, as you serve as a guiding light… Let the mighty force called education win over hurdles and rejections.”

More Than a Personal Milestone
For Jency, this moment transcends personal achievement. She sees her success as a victory for the transgender community at large.

“This is not just my win — it’s for all of us,” she said. “I faced rejection, I faced pain. But education transformed my life. It can change others’ lives too.”

She passionately called on society to embrace transgender individuals with the same dignity extended to everyone else.

“Why chase us away? Why deny us a place in the world? I was a gold medallist, even when my own family struggled to accept me. We too are nature’s children — accept us as you accept everything else in nature.”

Appeal for Structural Change
During a meeting with the Chief Minister, Jency made a heartfelt appeal for a permanent academic position in a government college, hoping her journey will encourage other transgender students to dream big.

“I don’t have a father,” she said. “But I see the CM as a father figure. If I’m appointed to a permanent role, it will show my community that we can aspire to more — and achieve it.”

A Step Toward Inclusive Academia
Jency’s appointment marks a watershed moment for LGBTQ+ representation in higher education in Tamil Nadu. As the state continues to advance policies rooted in social justice and equality, her story is a powerful reminder of how education can dismantle barriers and transform lives.
