Trump Says He Accepted Machado’s Nobel Medal Because ‘She Offered It’ and Claimed He ‘Ended Eight Wars’.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump defended his acceptance of Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado’s Nobel Peace Prize medal by saying simply that “she offered it to me” and citing her belief that he had “ended eight wars,” according to his remarks on Friday. Machado presented Trump with her 2025 Nobel Peace Prize medal during a White House meeting, and he publicly thanked her, calling the gesture one of “mutual respect.”
When asked why he would accept a Nobel medal awarded to someone else, Trump said, “Well, she offered it to me. I thought it was very nice. She said, you know, you have ended eight wars, and nobody deserves this prize more…in history…than you do. And I thought it was a very nice gesture.” He also praised Machado as “a very fine woman.”
Machado said she gifted the medal “as a recognition for his unique commitment with our freedom,” connecting the gesture to Trump’s involvement in Venezuela’s political developments.
However, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has underscored that the Peace Prize itself cannot be transferred or shared; while a laureate can give away the physical medal, the official title of Nobel Peace Prize winner remains permanently with the original recipient.
