Kim Jong Un Hails Restored Destroyer, Promises Naval Expansion Amid Rising Tensions.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un presided over a launch ceremony on Thursday for a 5,000-ton warship that had previously been damaged during its initial launch attempt, state media KCNA reported on Friday.

The destroyer had partially capsized in May, prompting Kim to condemn the incident as a “criminal act.” Satellite imagery had shown extensive repairs taking place, and Kim had ordered that the vessel be fully restored before a major party meeting in June.

At the ceremony, Kim praised the restoration effort and declared that the setback had not disrupted North Korea’s broader naval ambitions. He announced plans to construct two additional 5,000-ton destroyers in 2026, as part of what he described as a broader push to strengthen the nation’s maritime presence in the Pacific.

“Our goal to enhance naval power remains unchanged,” Kim stated. “Soon, our adversaries will experience firsthand how provocative it feels to see foreign warships operating near sovereign waters.”

Framing the move as a defensive measure, Kim accused the United States and its allies of increasing military provocations in the region and said the restored destroyer marked a significant step in asserting North Korea’s presence on the high seas.

“I’m confident that in the near future, the routes of our battleships will open across the Pacific Ocean, heading toward the very outposts of aggression,” Kim said.

The ceremony underscores North Korea’s continued focus on expanding its military capabilities, particularly at sea, amid growing geopolitical tensions in the region.
