Nicolas Maduro Adds Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs Lawyer to Defence Team in US Drug Trafficking Case

Former Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro has expanded his legal team by hiring a high-profile attorney who previously helped defend music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs in his closely watched criminal trial, according to court filings made public on Thursday. The move comes as Maduro prepares to challenge narcoterrorism and drug trafficking charges in the United States.

Maduro has pleaded not guilty to the charges and is currently being held at a federal detention facility in Brooklyn ahead of trial. He is scheduled to appear in a Manhattan federal court on June 30, where his lawyers are expected to outline pre-trial motions, including efforts to have the case dismissed.

Anna Estevao Joins Defence Team

The latest addition to Maduro’s defence is Anna Estevao, a partner at Harris Trzaskoma and a member of the legal team that represented Sean “Diddy” Combs during his federal criminal trial. Court records show Estevao formally joined Maduro’s defence on Thursday.

Estevao gained national attention for her role in Combs’ defence, particularly during her cross-examination of key prosecution witness Casandra Ventura. Combs was acquitted of the most serious charges he faced, including sex trafficking and racketeering, though he was convicted on lesser prostitution-related offences and is appealing both his conviction and sentence.

Her appointment comes shortly after veteran defence lawyer Barry Pollack, who has represented high-profile clients including WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, joined the same law firm. Pollack is already leading Maduro’s defence effort.

Legal Challenges Ahead

Pollack has indicated that Maduro’s legal team intends to challenge the circumstances surrounding his capture and transfer to the United States. Defence lawyers are expected to argue that the operation carried out in Caracas earlier this year was unlawful and may seek dismissal of the charges on procedural and jurisdictional grounds.

US prosecutors accuse Maduro of participating in a narcoterrorism and drug trafficking conspiracy that allegedly facilitated the movement of cocaine into the United States. Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, have denied all allegations and pleaded not guilty.

High-Stakes Trial

The case has attracted significant international attention due to Maduro’s former position as Venezuela’s leader and the unusual circumstances surrounding his arrest and extradition. Legal experts expect the proceedings to involve complex questions related to international law, jurisdiction and potential claims of immunity.

With Estevao now joining the defence team, Maduro has assembled a group of lawyers known for handling some of the most prominent and complex criminal cases in the United States, setting the stage for a closely watched legal battle in the months ahead.
