The Centre has directed social media platform X to immediately remove and disable access to “obscene, nude, indecent and sexually explicit content” generated and circulated through.

The misuse of AI-based tools such as Grok, citing provisions of the Information Technology Act, 2000 and the IT Rules, 2021. In a letter addressed to X’s Chief Compliance Officer, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) instructed the Elon Musk-owned platform to conduct an immediate and comprehensive review of Grok and ensure the prompt removal or disabling of unlawful content.

The ministry said it had observed that “Grok AI”, developed by X and integrated into the platform, was being misused by users to create fake accounts for hosting, generating, publishing or sharing obscene images and videos of women in a derogatory and vulgar manner.

“It has especially been observed that the service namely ‘Grok AI’ developed by you and integrated and made available on the X platform is being misused by users to create fake accounts to host, generate, publish or share obscene images or videos of women in a derogatory or vulgar manner in order to indecently denigrate them,” the MeitY letter stated.

The ministry added that such activity reflected serious lapses in platform-level safeguards and enforcement mechanisms and amounted to a gross misuse of artificial intelligence technologies in violation of applicable laws.
