India gears up for its first home Test series of the season as the senior selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, meets on Wednesday, 24 September to finalise the squad for the two-Test clash against the West Indies.
The series kicks off at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium on 2 October, just four days after the Asia Cup final in Dubai, marking a swift transition from limited-overs action to red-ball cricket.
A New Era at Home
This will be India’s first home Test series in over a decade without stalwarts Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and R Ashwin, all of whom retired before the England Tests. The new generation, under Shubman Gill’s captaincy, impressed by drawing the five-match England series 2–2, and they enter the series with confidence against a West Indies side that has struggled abroad. The series also offers a chance to bounce back from last year’s 0–3 home defeat to New Zealand.
Key Selection Considerations
Jasprit Bumrah’s Availability:
The biggest talking point ahead of selection is Jasprit Bumrah. With a packed schedule ahead—including five T20Is in Australia, another five against South Africa, and two Tests in South Africa—there was speculation about resting him. However, assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate hinted that Bumrah may feature in the first Test. The pace attack is expected to comprise Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, and Akash Deep, with Bumrah leading the line. Should Akash Deep miss out due to injury, Harshit Rana or Arshdeep Singh could be called up.
Wicketkeeping Concerns:
Rishabh Pant remains unavailable due to a leg injury. Dhruv Jurel, who impressed during the Oval Test and for India A, is likely to start, with N Jagadeesan as the backup and flexible top-order option.
The No. 3 Slot:
India continues to search for stability at No. 3 after Cheteshwar Pujara’s omission. Sai Sudharsan, trialed in England, showed promise, while Karun Nair and Shubman Gill have also been considered. The team may persist with Sudharsan, hoping for better home returns.
Middle Order and Other Options:
Abhimanyu Easwaran, still uncapped, may miss out again, with selectors likely favouring Jagadeesan as the dual-role backup. Karun Nair may retain a spot in the middle order due to his experience, despite limited returns in England. Devdutt Padikkal, after a 150 for India A, is another contender. Shreyas Iyer has withdrawn from India A due to back issues, and Sarfaraz Ahmed remains sidelined for rehabilitation.
Spin Department:
Ravindra Jadeja will lead the spin attack in R Ashwin’s absence. Kuldeep Yadav and Washington Sundar are expected picks, while Axar Patel hopes for a recall amid competition from Manav Suthar, who recently claimed a five-wicket haul for India A.
