X Admits Mistake, Deletes 600+ Accounts After Grok Obscenity Controversy.

Social media platform X has acknowledged its error and assured the Indian government that it will comply with local laws, government sources said.

As part of corrective measures, the platform blocked around 3,500 pieces of content and removed over 600 accounts following concerns about the circulation of obscene imagery, particularly generated via Grok AI.

Government sources added that X has pledged to prevent such content in the future and agreed to strengthen its content moderation processes to ensure ongoing compliance with Indian regulations.

Background of the Action

The move comes shortly after the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) raised concerns over the creation and distribution of indecent or sexually explicit AI-generated content on platforms like Grok.

On January 2, the IT Ministry had ordered X to immediately remove all vulgar, obscene, and unlawful content, particularly that generated via Grok, warning that non-compliance could lead to action under the IT Act and other applicable laws. The ministry also directed X to submit a detailed Action Taken Report within 72 hours, outlining:

  • Technical and administrative steps taken regarding Grok,
  • Supervision by the Chief Compliance Officer,
  • Actions against objectionable content, users, and accounts,

Systems implemented to ensure compliance with mandatory reporting obligations under Indian law.

The ministry highlighted that Grok AI was being misused not only to generate fake profiles but also to harass and target women, including through prompts, image editing, and the creation of synthetic content to manipulate or abuse visuals.

On January 8, X submitted a lengthy response to the IT Ministry, which the government described as “detailed but not adequate,” prompting further scrutiny of the platform’s moderation and compliance mechanisms.
