Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief and actor Vijay has been summoned by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for questioning on January 12 in connection with the Karur stampede case, sources said.
Vijay has been asked to appear before the CBI headquarters in New Delhi as part of the ongoing probe into the incident. The summons follows the agency’s questioning of senior TVK functionaries, whose statements have already been recorded as part of the investigation.
The stampede occurred on September 27 during a TVK public meeting in Karur attended by Vijay, leaving at least 41 people dead and over 110 injured.
The Supreme Court had ordered a CBI probe into the incident to ascertain the causes of the stampede and fix responsibility. Acting on a plea filed by TVK seeking an independent investigation, the court also constituted a three-member monitoring committee headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice Ajay Rastogi to oversee the probe and ensure its independence and fairness.
Since taking over the case, the CBI has been examining permissions granted for the event, crowd management arrangements, police deployment, and emergency response measures. The agency is also recording statements of party functionaries and officials linked to the organisation of the event.
